Why Sitting Out the Latest Social Media Trend Might Be the Best Thing for Your Brand
The title reads: Why sitting out the latest social media trend might be the best thing for your brand. The background shows two images of a Coldplay concert, with the main focus being the infamous kiss cam camera angle of Chris Martin singing.
Not every social media trend is going to be the right fit for your brand, and that's completely OK!
Recently, I’ve seen a few purpose-led organisations trying to follow the lead of big corporates like Duolingo and Ryanair when it comes to jumping on social media trends.
But here’s the thing: What might work for a trendy global brand with a huge following doesn’t mean it will if you're a small, purpose-driven business or charity.
In fact, it can sometimes hurt your reputation.
So, sometimes, choosing not to jump on a trend is the smartest move.
Here’s why: ❌ Not every trend fits ❌
The latest social media trend may be fun, but it HAS to make sense for your audience and reflect what you stand for.
If you’re known for your strong values and warm tone of voice, ask yourself:
↳ Does this trend reflect that, or risk undermining it?
If you have any doubts, it’s OK to choose not to join in.
I know in marketing the pressure to get more views and engagement is real, but it’s important to remember that staying true to your values matters way more than a trend!
All this to say, trends aren't off limits!
On the right occasions, jumping on trends can be a great strategic choice.
But just before jumping on to them, ask yourself:
↳ Will this resonate with our audience?
↳ Does it reflect our values?
↳ Is it respectful and kind?
